M.M. Miller

Civil Engineering & Utilities

MM Miller has amassed considerable civil engineering experience all over the Highlands, from complex drainage systems to large concrete works. Our local knowledge in dealing with the variable ground conditions from solid rock to peat, and even more variable weather conditions (all seasons in one day!) allows us to minimise the risks normally associated with civil engineering works in difficult environments.

With our own engineering expertise and modern high quality plant, MM Miller is well placed to meet the civil engineering and utilities challenges posed by clients with demanding requirements.  MM Miller holds WIRS accreditation for laying water mains & NERS accreditation for excavating tracks and laying cables, both schemes are administered by Lloyds Register and reflect MM Miller’s capabilities in the Utilities Sector.

Other Notable Civil Engineering & Utilities Projects

Demolition of a Block of Flats

Wick

This project comprised the stripping out and subsequent demolition of a three storey block of flats in a residential area. The site was next to occupied houses, an old folk’s home and a block of sheltered accommodation units and all works were completed without a single complaint. We recycled the bricks from the demolition works by crushing and screening them for re-use as hardcore.

Repositioning lower ducts containing fibre-optic cables

Dounreay

Repositioning lower ducts containing fibre-optic cables in Dounreay. This high-risk project entailed carefully breaking away the concrete surround from the ducts, deepening the trench, lowering the ducts and encasing them in new concrete. The undertaking was a complete success, as no damage was caused to the fibre-optic cables. For good measure, our operatives were praised by the client’s Safety & Assurance teams for their good practice and good client-contractor working relationship.

Mercat Cross

Dornoch, Sutherland

We had to work extremely carefully around the Mercat Cross, a scheduled ancient monument. The skills we deployed to ensure the Mercat Cross was not disturbed were transferred from an unlikely source – a Nuclear Power Station. Our experience of working carefully in proximity to sensitive equipment proved invaluable when it came to working carefully around an ancient monument!

Site Infrastructure Works for Housing Development

Tain

Phase 1 Project value: £611k.
Phase 2 Project value: £582k.

This contract was completed over two phases. Phase One comprised construction of access roads, surfacing works, sewers, utility services, SUDS attenuation, fencing and landscaping to create 14 serviced plots. We also had to instigate traffic management during the A9 road crossing, and deal with excessive groundwater on site during construction. Phase Two comprised the creation of 28 serviced plots, and entailed gaining access through the first phase, which was partially occupied by new home owners and still had new houses under construction. We installed specific traffic and pedestrian management plans to make life easier for the new occupiers while works were carried out.

Project Value: £1.19m

Our extensive portfolio includes projects in housing development, utilities, Dounreay decommissioning, streetscape rejuvenation and renewables.

Recently, we constructed the site infrastructure for housing developments in Thurso, Wick, Tain, Alness and Culbokie, creating more than 250 plots.

MM Miller is also heavily involved in the Utilities sector, working for clients such as Scottish & Southern Energy, Scottish Water and The Highland Council. Our competence in this sector is emphasised by our UVDB accreditation. MM Miller holds WIRS accreditation for laying water mains & NERS accreditation for excavating tracks and laying cables, both schemes are administered by Lloyds Register and reflect MM Miller’s capabilities in the Utilities Sector.

Our work in the ongoing decommissioning process at the Dounreay Nuclear Establishment site has included many civil engineering tasks, often in difficult locations. Some of the projects testing our ingenuity and expertise have been the construction of concrete bases for a ventilation system; excavating a 7m deep pit in rock adjacent to an existing building, the construction of concrete bases and bund walls for an oil storage facility, and demolition of various redundant buildings.

Streetscape rejuvenation projects in Inverness, Invergordon, Brora and Wick have been successfully completed against a backdrop of traffic management in busy thoroughfares, occupied commercial premises and congested pedestrian areas.

MM Miller has also been at the forefront of the emerging Renewables sector, and has already constructed bases for Biomass boilers with associated trackworks, and foundations for wind turbines.

The company sees itself as a team player and regularly operates as a subcontractor or Tier 2 contractor, providing services to larger organisations.

With our own engineering expertise and modern high quality plant, MM Miller is well placed to meet the civil engineering and utilities challenges posed by clients with demanding requirements.
